NBC Selects Extreme Reach to Streamline Distribution
for On-Air Promotional TV Spots
Digital Platform Significantly Reduces Time-to-Air for Promos
NEEDHAM, Mass., September 1, 2011 – Extreme Reach Inc., a leading provider of video advertising management and distribution solutions, today announced its partnership with NBC to efficiently and effectively deliver promotional spots from NBC’s production centers in New York City and Burbank, CA to their network affiliates across the country. With this new overall solution, which NBC has named “CliC” (Connect, Locate, Integrate, Communicate), Extreme Reach digitally delivers dozens of individual NBC promos to the network’s affiliates each day. By automating and streamlining the delivery process through its cloud-computing platform, Extreme Reach will provide millions of dollars of value to the network and save NBC affiliates hours of labor each week.
Until now, the process of aggregating and delivering daily promotional spots by multiple satellite feeds for NBC entertainment, news and sports programming to network affiliates has experienced significant lag time in distribution. With the Extreme Reach tailored video distribution solution, NBC on-air promotion spots can be distributed faster and earlier each day, resulting in significantly more local airtime for each promo. Since the new program launched in mid-June, more than 100 NBC affiliates across the U.S. have already upgraded from their satellite-based promo delivery model to the Extreme Reach cloud-based solution. Additional affiliates are signing on every day and NBC plans to completely phase out satellite-based distribution of daily short-form promos by the early part of 2012.
All broadcasters currently use multiple daily satellite feeds to deliver promotional spots to their affiliates, which require several manual steps, both on the network and local station side. The Extreme Reach solution enables NBC to deliver promos faster by eliminating manual steps and the scheduling dependencies of satellite feeds. All NBC promotional spots are produced and distributed in high definition. The Extreme Reach system delivers HD files in customized formats directly to NBC affiliates and automatically converts the HD files to letter-box-formatted standard definition files for local affiliates that broadcast in standard definition. Each local station can also determine other custom format and delivery options to further automate promo deliveries. As a result, local stations gain quicker, easier access to promotional spots, enabling them to air promos earlier and more often each day.
NBC stations can automate downloads directly into their operational workflow or access promos through a Web browser. Local stations incur no additional costs and require no new equipment to support this new streamlined approach. The increased accessibility and ease of adoption makes it possible for all NBC stations and affiliates to switch from the old satellite model to the new cloud-computing solution within a very short transition window. More than 220 NBC affiliates already receive commercials from their advertisers via Extreme Reach. The new CliC service is an additional but related solution designed specifically for network promotion material.
“We pride ourselves on having the best network-affiliate partnership and a big part of our job is to provide NBC Entertainment, News and Sports promotional assets to our 234 stations to help support network programming,” said Scot Chastain, SVP Affiliate Marketing & Development at NBC. “We have been working on a clean and turnkey digital spot delivery solution for several years and now we can seamlessly deliver them to our stations within minutes of their completion. The final link in the process is our new relationship with Extreme Reach that has given us the ability to expedite the endpoint delivery, making it easy for stations to access NBC promos, integrate them into their playback system and ultimately, help increase awareness and viewership for our programming.”
“Our collaboration with NBC on the development of ‘CliC’ exemplifies our commitment to continually innovate in order to save our customers and affiliates time and money,” said John Roland, CEO of Extreme Reach. “Extreme Reach was a natural fit for NBC. The resulting value this new solution has brought to NBC’s promotional spot distribution process is significant, not only when you look at the ROI in terms of cost, but also in the considerable amount of time it saves the network and its local affiliates.”

NBC Television Network
The NBC Television Network’s strength derives from combining NBC’s strong national identity and programming with the local identity and programming of its affiliates in communities across America. The sale of advertising time enables the NBC Television Network to provide programming to the public free of charge.
Affiliated television stations are an integral part of NBC’s overall broadcast service. The NBC Television Network broadcasts approximately 5,000 hours of TV programming each year, transmitting to more than 200 affiliated stations across the United States. These independently owned affiliates then broadcast the NBC signal to an estimated 99 percent of all homes in the United States with television sets. In addition to airing NBC’s national programming, affiliates serve their communities by producing news, sports, and public affairs programming that addresses local needs.
